Aretha Franklin’s Live Gospel Album Finally to Reach the Cinema – “Amazing Grace”

On August 16th we will remember one year since Aretha Franklin left our world and imprinted our hearts forever. A day that will remain in history as a day we all lost a bit of soul. Imagining a world of music without such an incredible talent has in no way become any easier with time. She was not only an astounding vocalist, but a lover of many with an infectious spirit, and a timeless icon in gospel music.

Whether you are a believer in Christ or not, some performers carry a sense of godliness in them that comes from their spirit when they sing. Franklin was one of those vocalists that causes you to look to God because of the richness of the soul in everything she did and in each performance.

In 1972, at the age of thirty years old, Aretha Franklin was hosted by the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church of Los Angeles, California for a two-night special performance. However, no one could have believed this would become the biggest selling live gospel album in history. Altogether, the production was set to be a powerful and moving expression of art and media but was left untouched (for the most part) and unseen by most of the world, until now.

The art of Reconstruction

The new film titled Amazing Grace is one of its kind. The phenomenon of mixing media and arts to produce something wonderful that has never been done before is not simply creating something that is new but rather an entire experience that has never been had. Oscar winner Sydney Pollack was brought on to direct multicamera footage of the entire two-day performance, all taking place in the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church.

Due to the quality and abilities of filmography from the early 1970s being much less advanced than what we consider to be ‘workable’ now, the footage sat unedited for decades. It was not until very recently that the correct digital editing technology was even created to reconstruct the footage. Producer Alan Elliot became interested in the project that was becoming more relevant as film production became more advanced.

The Worship Experience

The Guardian describes Elliot’s work on the film by Pollack to capture both the hive of musical activity and fervor or religious ecstasy that thronged through that church all those years ago. There is always a greater sense of intimacy between the artists and listeners when there is a raw visual performance, much like the experience of going to a concert versus listening in your headphones. Amazing Grace brings us directly into the intimacy of that worship experience that took place almost 50 years ago.

Overall, the project is one of its kind that has never been done before. The art of bringing an audience into such an intimate and spirit-filled experience that was had so long ago and giving it new power and strength constitutes an utter masterpiece. The film has had a gradual release, as it has been featured throughout 2018 in various film festivals across the US. It officially released in the UK last week, with additional scheduled releases in other countries throughout the summer. #BETSundayBest is back!

You have probably heard the names Kierra Sheard, Mary Mary, Yolanda Adams, Donnie McClurkin, Bebe and Cece Winans, and Kirk Franklin. But what do all these incredible talents have in common? Black Entertainment Television (BET) Gospel music singing competition called Sunday Best is hosted and judged by each one of these brilliant artists and personalities. BET released the first episode of the inspiring reality series in October of 2007.

http://myhoustongospel.com/2019/01/bet-sunday-best-to-return-spring-2019/

Since the original release date, the series has produced and aired eight consecutive seasons. Sunday Best was on the air, and doing well, through the summer of 2015. Finale winner, Dathan Thigpen, was a familiar face to all who were following the competition from the 3rd season. Though Thigpen was voted off at the time, he returned to give the competition his all in the final season – he took the stage and all of our hearts! The series rounded out with an overwhelming response from fans and such a strong presence of God, as all glory and praise throughout the competition was given to Him.

After taking what was thought to be their final bow, judges and host, Kirk Franklin never would have imagined the competition to start up again for a ninth season. Yet, here we are. It is 2019 and BET recently announced the show’s return to the network, coming June 2019. You can expect some familiarity but look out for a total revamp of the complete design and production. Judges will include, again, the one and only Erica Campbell from Mary Mary, along with Kelly Price and Jon McReynolds.

While each season has started out with ten contestants in the past, the new season will gather a group of twenty aspiring Gospel singers from all over the world. The audition locations include Dallas, Atlanta, Johannesburg, and London. You can expect to see amazing talent come out, from both near and far. With so many other reality television programs clouding the networks today, it is encouraging to see the Lord’s name lifted high in the media, across so many varying audiences. These upcoming stars will be recognized and known for their praise, and while the competition will be strong between the contestants, God is the One to receive all the glory.

Make sure to get caught up if you have not yet seen the older seasons and tune in on June 30th for the premiere of season 9! Watch Sunday Best on BET every Sunday night and vote for your favorite Gospel singers. In previous seasons, the winner received a national recording contract, a cash prize and the esteemed title of “Sunday Best”. It has not yet been confirmed if the rewards will be the same for the winners this time around, but we are sure it will be something you do not want to miss!

If you want to follow the performances and updates on Instagram and Twitter, check out #BETSundayBest and don’t forget to vote!

Sinach Goes Viral

Groundbreaking Gospel Starlets

Known around the world as the first lady of gospel music, Sinach, according to ‘All Africa’ news, has broken the record by being the first gospel artiste in the country of Nigeria “to amass over 100 million views on YouTube.”

The record-breaking event reflects the increasingly word-wide appeal held by some of Nigerian gospel singers. Millions of gospel singers around the world are turning to these inspirational musicians who create uplifting beats, as well as minister the Word of God.

Sinach is not the only gospel star to receive such attention. In the same article, All Africa news reported about other musicians that are gaining similar success. According to the article “Sinach became the first Gospel singer from Nigeria to record over 100 million views on a single video on Youtube, and the third Nigerian to achieve that feat, next to Davido and Yemi Alade, who achieved the same feat in December 2018. She achieved this with her song, WayMaker which was published 30th December 2015, amassed over 100,166,641 (a hundred million) views on YouTube.

Beyond the catchy tunes of these massively popular gospel songs, a reason for their appeal is that these artistes seem to put forth the message and spirit of Loveworld International. Sinach, who is a senior worship leader at Loveworld has “an anointing to her song and this has taken her to three continents and major concerts including an event in 2016 by the revered healing evangelist, Benny Hinn.

According to All Africa “It is a testimony that Osinachi Joseph (her name having been married to Joe Egbu in 2014) has catalyzed a vibrant music ministry at her church and helped developed the now rested Love World Records which has produced the likes of Joe Praize, Ada Ehi and so many others to mention a few.

Sinach has produced seven albums namely Chapter One, I’m Blessed, Shout it Loud, From Glory to Glory, Sinach at Christmas, Sinach Live in Concert- The Name of Jesus, and Waymaker- Live. She has also written and performed an array of tracks including “You Lord”, “Rejoice”, “He Did It Again”, “Precious Jesus”, “The Name of Jesus”, “This Is my Season”, “Awesome God”, “For This”, “I Stand Amazed”, “Simply Devoted” and “Jesus is Alive”.

In 2016, Sinach was the first recipient of the LIMA Songwriter of the Decade Award, recognizing her contribution to gospel music in the previous decade

Cleveland Enjoys Another Winter Jam Spectacular

On March 31st, Winter Jam Spectacular wrapped up its annual east-coast tour for the year of 2019 with a final stop in Cleveland, Ohio.

The Winter Jam tour is known as the largest lineup of Christian artists and performers, travelling the US each year for the worship experience of a lifetime (Or until the tour returns to your city again!). It has become one of the main highlight events across youth groups and ministries throughout the nation, as friends and families anxiously await their chance to worship live with their favorite artists. The lineup this year for the east coast includes performers such as Newsboys United, Mandisa, Rend Collective, Hollyn, and more.

The 2019 East Coast tour kicked off in Jacksonville, Florida on January 11th and has made its way to Texas, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Pennsylvania, to name just a few of the main stops along the way. Winter Jam has been gathering communities together for one night of city-wide corporate worship since 1995 and has not stopped growing since. In 2011, the tour had already grown in attendance, far surpassing other headlining tours in the same season including Bon Jovi, U2, Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, and Brad Paisley.

This year specifically, The Winter Jam tour is like it never has been before. They have introduced a new stage that allows the audience to enjoy the performance from all angles, giving the new name “Winter Jam 360 Tour”. With a 360-degree view, and 120 feet of center stage, most of these artists are performing like they never have before. This requires all new choreography, stage awareness, and audience engagement. The shows have been nothing short of spectacular!

The concert aspires to relay one very important message to Christian’s and non-Christian’s alike; it is fun to be in the presence of God! It doesn’t take serious focus to be in the presence of God and to worship Him. Artist Patrick Thompson (Rend Collective) said in an interview last week with The Daily Item, “We often attribute deeper worship to when our hands are raised or whether we have our eyes closed. But we have a God who loves laughter, a God who dances, and He takes joy and delights in us delighting in His presence as well.”

The tour has become a brand in itself and offers a special membership package that promises various benefits at the concert. In addition to things like signed posters, choosing your personal seat, T-shirts, and insider emails, you also get 40 free song downloads. It’s the perfect event to take your young ones to, as well to enjoy with parents and friends. The Winter Jam Tour asks for only a $15 donation at the door for all attendees. You can’t beat that price to see all your favorite artists in one place!

Mercy Chinwo Treats Us to a Highlife and Gospel Crossover

Nigerian singer, songwriter, Mercy Chinwo who came to prominence in the 2012 Nigerian Idol’s competition is back with another album.

Local airwaves have been featuring Chinwo’s hit song “Excess Love” quite a bit lately. The song has become a staple in the Nigerian church music scene, giving churchgoers some head bopping tunes heaps of inspiration.
It’s no wonder that the gospel starlet’s album is such a hit. The new album is a wonderfully melodic celebration of God and artfully incorporates the warm nostalgic sounds of traditional ‘highlife‘ music, a style of music that originated in Ghana during the early 1900s and has its influences in Yoruba and Igbo cultures.
Chinwo’s album features the highlife-style tracks such as ‘Bor Ekom’, ‘Regular’, ‘Imenem’, ‘Correct’, ‘I am’ and ‘Inhedinma’. These songs are infused with jazzy brass melodies, smooth basslines, and a hint of calypso flavor.

Mercy who comes from a humble background in Rivers State, Nigeria, is the first of six children. The singer recalls how supportive her family have been of her ever since she gained an interest in music. One can certainly sense Mercy’s passion for music from listening to her albums.
Her masterpiece, the track entitled Bor Ekom is a true stamp of Chinwo’s magnificent vocal prowess. The song features a scat and Zulu drawl that beautifully encapsulates that South African flavor, an influence that the artist has really gravitated towards.

The artist brings listeners harmonies that reminds us that artists like her have fulfilled their “responsibility to tell the world about God. She delightfully sings the words, “You never change…You won’t start now” and applies some intensity when she sings the line, “How excellent is your name”. ‘My Responsibility’ is the perfect recipe for new levels of worship.
Music in Africa magazine reviewed Mercy’s latest album described the track ‘Igwe’ ft. Fiokee Chinwo “as a soft ballad fit for a musical. “Her voice becomes slightly animated as the digital instrumentation does a pizzicato number. It’s almost like a whole orchestra comes in at “Oh, what a father I have in you”, immediately creating imagery of heaven’s armies coming to the rescue when you choose God over anyone else. This is the album’s most classical piece.”

Other notable tracks on the album include “Omekannaya” a soulful acoustic ballad with a divinely Zulu acapella feel, “Imenem”- reminiscent of Kenny Kore’s ‘Hallelujah’ and Correct, a modern calypso-inspired delight.
The album is of course filled with great songs and is an expected hit by Nigeria’s favorite gospel starlet.

Kanye West Throws Sunday Service Style Hip Hop Concert

Kanye West decided to turn a recent Sunday prayer session into a full-blown concert. The result- a successful Kanye Hip Hop show infused with gospel church energy.

The prayers service turned Hip Hop show featured some of the biggest names in the rap industry, with collaborators such as Kid Cudi, Tony Williams and 070 Shake. The artists performed some of their best hits as well as gospel renditions including “Reborn,” “I Wonder” and “Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1.” According to the crowds, one of the most touching moments of the performance was his song ‘Reborn’, “the best song to come out of G.O.O.D Music’s chaotic summer.

Kanye West has said that his spiritual breakthrough is largely due to the artist Chance the Rapper. West has thanked the famed Christian rapper for helping him “reconnect him to his Christian faith, which is greatly impacting his family.”
In a tweet, the mega-star wrote “you have to see and feel how happy I am and how strong my family is,” West tweeted. “We are even stronger because of this through the love and grace of God.”

“I need to speak about how Chance demanding that we record in Chicago reconnected me with my roots and also my faith in Jesus Christ,” he said. Over the summer, the two artists collaborated on a joint album in a Chicago studio. According to xxlmag.com, “Chance and West did not complete the album but apparently, their time together was an opportunity for Chance to share some of his faith with the controversial trailblazer enough to stir his faith back up.”

Chance is not only inspiring others to follow the righteous path but is also on his own spiritual mission. Earlier this month, he announced that he’s leaving the country to “learn the Word of God,” acknowledging that while he was raised in a Christian home, he’s essentially “unfamiliar” with the Bible.
“I’m on a plane headed out the country on my first sabbatical,” the artist wrote in a recent Instagram post. “I’m going away to learn the Word of God which I am admittedly very unfamiliar with. I’ve been brought up by my family to know Christ, but I haven’t taken it upon myself to really just take a couple of days and read my Bible. We all quote scripture and tell each other what God likes and doesn’t like, but how much time do we spend as followers of Jesus to really just read and KNOW His Word. I’m definitely guilty of not devoting time to it.”

It sounds like we can all be expecting some amazing music from both Kanye and Chance very soon.

The ‘Experience’ Concert – Jesus Our Peace

This year’s Experience concert just wrapped up and the turnout was simply overwhelming.

An exhilarated crowd at the recent ‘Experience Concert in Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos, Nigeria roared and cheered at the incredible line-up of this year’s gospel extravaganza. The concert, now in its 13th year has been the most popular concert for gospel fans around the world. This year, under the theme ‘Jesus Our Peace’ the artistes dedicated their music to the pursuit of world peace by improvising and creating songs on the spot with the word ‘peace’. Some musicians even quoted scripture while keeping in with the theme.

African-American pop-gospel singer Kirk Franklin took to the stage with an impressive rap on the subject. In his song, he wowed crowds with the words peace transcends to Abuja Akwa Ibom etc. Among the many other artists were, Planet Shakers, Don Moen, Donnie McClurkin, Eben, Chioma Jesus, Travis Greene, Mike Aremu, Glowreeyah, Timi Dakolo all of which dazzled the tens of thousands of soul-winners that stood before them.

The show also featured incredible collaborations between artists and was indeed an enlightening experience for all present. The world’s finest gospel artistes led the crowd into fiery praise and worship into God’s glorious embrace. Over 70 000 people united and inspired with reverence over musicians overpowering musical ministering.
Explaining the choice of theme, The Experience Convener, Pastor Paul Adefarasin of House On The Rock Church said, “The theme ‘Jesus our Peace’ is significant because it precedes a crucial election year. Despite many challenges Nigerians may face, we cannot afford to lose faith in God’s ability to turn things around for our good, choosing to see a bright future, the Nigeria of our dreams, one that we can proudly bequeath to the ‘next-generations.’ Above all, peace must be our ultimate candidate, regardless of the outcome of the elections – we all need to work together for a peaceful win.”
Pastor Paul Adefarasin continued by stressing that not only is the annual concert a source of inspiration to millions of gospel fans and congregants, but it is also a tourist attraction for the nation of Nigeria.

“The Experience is a major contributor to both our National and State economies through tourism and its associated businesses.”, Adefarasin continued, noting that “Entrepreneurs have developed and birthed various enterprises which substantially contribute to the economy in areas of human capital development, hospitality, commerce and industry.

“The Entertainment sector of the economy has also blossomed over the last 12 years of the Experience. This is evident as many of our indigenous gospel artistes who featured on its platform have become highly sought-after internationally, with significant changes in their personal economies. Several international collaborations between our home-based music ministers and their foreign counterparts have been birthed on this very platform.”
With an incredibly successful Experience 2018 behind us, millions of fans are already looking forward to the next one.
