Aretha Franklin’s Live Gospel Album Finally to Reach the Cinema – “Amazing Grace”

On August 16th we will remember one year since Aretha Franklin left our world and imprinted our hearts forever. A day that will remain in history as a day we all lost a bit of soul. Imagining a world of music without such an incredible talent has in no way become any easier with time. She was not only an astounding vocalist, but a lover of many with an infectious spirit, and a timeless icon in gospel music.

Whether you are a believer in Christ or not, some performers carry a sense of godliness in them that comes from their spirit when they sing. Franklin was one of those vocalists that causes you to look to God because of the richness of the soul in everything she did and in each performance.

In 1972, at the age of thirty years old, Aretha Franklin was hosted by the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church of Los Angeles, California for a two-night special performance. However, no one could have believed this would become the biggest selling live gospel album in history. Altogether, the production was set to be a powerful and moving expression of art and media but was left untouched (for the most part) and unseen by most of the world, until now.

The art of Reconstruction

The new film titled Amazing Grace is one of its kind. The phenomenon of mixing media and arts to produce something wonderful that has never been done before is not simply creating something that is new but rather an entire experience that has never been had. Oscar winner Sydney Pollack was brought on to direct multicamera footage of the entire two-day performance, all taking place in the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church.

Due to the quality and abilities of filmography from the early 1970s being much less advanced than what we consider to be ‘workable’ now, the footage sat unedited for decades. It was not until very recently that the correct digital editing technology was even created to reconstruct the footage. Producer Alan Elliot became interested in the project that was becoming more relevant as film production became more advanced.

The Worship Experience

The Guardian describes Elliot’s work on the film by Pollack to capture both the hive of musical activity and fervor or religious ecstasy that thronged through that church all those years ago. There is always a greater sense of intimacy between the artists and listeners when there is a raw visual performance, much like the experience of going to a concert versus listening in your headphones. Amazing Grace brings us directly into the intimacy of that worship experience that took place almost 50 years ago.

Overall, the project is one of its kind that has never been done before. The art of bringing an audience into such an intimate and spirit-filled experience that was had so long ago and giving it new power and strength constitutes an utter masterpiece. The film has had a gradual release, as it has been featured throughout 2018 in various film festivals across the US. It officially released in the UK last week, with additional scheduled releases in other countries throughout the summer. Check out the official trailer for Aretha Franklin’s new tribute film “Amazing Grace”

Women in the Christian Entertainment Industry

PROCLAIM19 DISCUSSES WOMEN IN THE INDUSTRY

National Religious Broadcaster recently wrapped up their annual International Christian Media Convention, Proclaim 19. The convention took place in Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California from March 26-29, 2019

ChristianWomeninEntertainment

This gathering included the most talented and successful producers, organizers, directors, and musicians in the Christian entertainment industry, making for an enriching experience for all creative leaders worldwide. In addition to the amazing networking opportunities when you gather so many creative minds together in one space, you may also find yourself amongst some of the most important and necessary players in the industry. Sometimes, when it comes to ministry, things can require reaching for resources more outside of the box; the lawyers and the advertisement companies, the webmasters and travel agencies, came together to learn more about the industry in which they are all so uniquely intertwined between faith and profession.

With endless knowledge being shared at such an event as this one, there is also an opportunity to open the floor and shed light on specific issues in the industry by facilitating a healthy and educated conversation around them. One of the several panel sessions at Proclaim 19 was titled ‘Women in Entertainment’. The panel was moderated by Evy Baehr Carrol, host and director of creative content at Movieguide, and the first of its category at the annual convention.

One of the panelists, “War Room” actress Priscilla Shirer, speaks about the balance that working in the industry requires of her. For a Christian woman, this balance is not between fame and success, but rather in Priscilla’s case, it is all about prioritizing and seeking God’s face. “There are seasons to a woman’s life, and certain things the Lord calls you to prioritize in one season are going to shift in another season,” Shirer said. “Our task is to tune in and ask the Lord, ‘What will honor You in this particular season of my life? What do I need to prioritize so that my priorities align with Yours during this season?’ And I give myself to those fully.” All the panelists could agree on one thing, it takes constant turning to and relying on God’s direction and discernment when choosing what and how much to take on in the film industry.

Here is a trailer for the movie ‘War Room’:

On the other side of this unwavering devotion to remain in God’s will and continuously seek Him first is the side of the industry. With trusting in the sovereignty and omnipotence of God, producers and directors find themselves to be quite satisfied with the work but must remember just as well to hold it loosely, trust in the Lord and always be willing to let go of something for Him to take it away.

In closing words, Carrol spoke of the encouragement that came from this session and states “[God] has shown us His faithfulness and hope in the entertainment industry. This is exactly our desire at Movieguide, to help encourage women and men to make great faith-filled content in the entertainment industry and fulfill God’s purpose in their lives.”

Crowns: A Gospel Musical Delight

A soul-stirring Gospel musical written by the award-winning American actress and playwright, Regina Taylor is making its way to Theatre Tuscaloosa this Friday. The musical, named “Crowns” is expected to reach into the souls of the audience with its soaring vocals and inspiring worship tunes.
Set in a typical contemporary Southern church, “Crowns” follows a troubled 17-year old named Yolanda (played by Ashley Jones) who moves in with her grandmother in South Carolina, following the death of her brother.

Young Yolanda finds herself under the mentorship of Mother Shaw (NorQuina Rieves), learning about the traditions surrounding Southern headgear and what it takes to be a church “Hat Queen”.
This is precisely what makes this play shine. Its creative usage of lavish church hats creates a colorful display in the Southern style church pews stage setting, bringing forth the characters, and making “Crowns” a spectacular tribute to the rich and lively Carolinian gospel church scene. Theatre Tuscaloosa sought “Crowns” as part of its mission to represent all cultures in its community.

“Our community can identify with these characters,” said Tina F. Turley, executive producer. “Theatre Tuscaloosa needs to tell our community stories… some of our stories are white, some of our stories are black, some of our stories are Asian-American. We’ve got lots of stories to tell, as far as ethnic background.”

Some in the audience could experience immediate recognition, while others may be going to school.
“They are going to reminisce who wore hats in their lives, or they’re going to learn about this culture: the culture of black churches and the mothers, the women that wore hats, and the whys behind it, and the sacrifices they make to do it,” said Mark Moore, guest director and choreographer for this run of “Crowns.” Luvada Harrison is musical director.

“Crowns” falls under the category of a jukebox musical, meaning it uses existing songs, rather than writing new work for the score. Though it leans heavily on gospel, “Crowns” also draws from jazz, spirituals, blues, reggae, R&B and hip-hop. Romps such as “When the Saints Go Marching In” will encourage audience members to join with the cast, clapping their hands and stomping their feet.

But whether an audience member identifies with the culture of black churches, or comes to the experience with an open mind, “Crowns” can transcend race and gender, said Catherine Doughty-Walker, who’s playing Wanda.

“You will laugh, you will cry, and by the end, you’ll probably be friends with the ladies in ‘Crowns’,” she said.

Performances will be 7:30 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Feb. 21-22, with 2 p.m. matinees Sunday, Wednesday and Feb. 23-24, all in the Bean-Brown Theatre at Shelton State Community College. Tickets are $24 general; $20 for seniors, Shelton State employees, and members of the military; and $16 for students and children.

Buchi in Benin

Reggae Gospel maestro, Buchi gave a stellar performance in the recent Inner-City Mission concert in Benin, Nigeria.
The concert that was organized to raise money for indigent children in underprivileged urban areas, primarily in Africa– was a total hit. Buchi’s surprise appearance drew massive crowds, virtually emptying the streets of Benin.

The music reverberated throughout the city walls, uplifting the massive crowds with those awesome signature-Buchi reggae beats, booming bass lines and rhythmic ‘Rasta’ riffs.

Buchi has been crowned as Africa’s voice of gospel reggae. For decades, the reggae gospel artist has been captivating fans with unforgettable performances. His recent Abuja concert emptied streets, making it “one of the most popular gospel crossover concerts in Nigerian history.” Buchi has released five audio albums and two video albums: These Days So Beautiful, What a life, The Sound of Life, and Over the years.

Buchi was born in Kaduna in 1963 and has lived most of his life in the lively city of Lagos.
Buchi, who is also the Inner City Mission Goodwill Ambassador planned this special event with his fellow Christ Embassy members of Benin, Zone 1 in order to raise awareness about “the plight of the indigent”, as well as raise funds to support the InnerCity Mission in reaching vulnerable children around the world.
The concert ended up raising thousands of dollars.

Families in the Benin community who attended the show were seen shedding tears from the sheer emotional and inspirational atmosphere that was saturated with Christ’s spirit. The attendants were also incredibly grateful for the initiative that was created to raise money for them and their families.
This is not the first concert of this nature to bring joy on such a massive scale. Pastor Chris, the president of both Christ Embassy and the NGO -Inner City Mission has been responsible for countless efforts to raise money for the neglected and disadvantaged. Pastor Chris also frequently has his hand in the music scene and has single-handedly fostered a global gospel empire filled with the world’s top artists known as the Loveworld Music Ministry.

The Ultimate Martin PK Playlist

Martin Phike, AKA Martin PK, the South African native–is one of the hottest gospel pop singers of our time and burst onto the scene at 16 years old. He began his career as the young musical prodigy of Gabi Le Roux, South Africa’s biggest producer (responsible for names such as Brenda Fassie, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Lebo Mathosa, Danny K and of course the beloved Mandoza). The young star only took off from there. After a good stint as a teen pop star, the musician, alongside his brother, created the unforgettable South African boyband ‘Inadiflo’.

The band saw a lot of success and landed a record deal with Sony. In 2004, he and his group Ghetto Lingo entered the Coca-Cola Popstars and were selected out of 15,000 participants. Fast forward to 2019 and Martin PK, with a career that now spans about two decades is currently one of the voices of the Loveworld Music Ministry, ministering to a global audience with his beautiful worship songs. His lyrics, bring words of hope and upliftment and make your heart sing. Get your Martin PK ‘fix’ with these five holy tunes!

Holy Spirit
The love in this song flows like water and is essentially a song of gratitude to the Lord Almighty. The Holy Spirit that guides us all cannot always be expressed in song, yet Martin PK seems to succeed.

Thus, Saith the Spirit
Based on the remarkable quote in Luke 4:18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, this song is an ode to the scripture. We are all merely messengers of the Lord.

Beautiful Jesus
Martin PK’s penetrating voice is accompanied by the heavenly echoes “How wonderful Jesus”, an effect that elevates your soul straight to the heavens. The video was shot in the beautiful Mahe Island in Seychelles, a place that almost represents paradise! Certainly, the apt theme for the song.

Nothing is Impossible
Once you accept that God is inside of you, there is simply nothing that can stand in your way, there is just no reason for fear. What better way to celebrate this glorious notion, other than with Martin PK’s hit track- Nothing is impossible. Enjoy this breathtaking performance on the Californian stage.

You are Great
Shot in the Holy Land, Jerusalem this worship song’s music video features some of the most sacred structures in Judeo-Christian history. One can feel the blessed earth beneath his feet by just simply watching it, not to mention the song itself moves the soul.

Sinach On Love, Life and Jesus Christ

Sinach interview on Christian Premier Radio

Sinach has had an incredible journey from a local church singer to international gospel superstar. The multi-award winner has over 200 songs to her name and is responsible for such hits such as ‘I know who I am’ and ‘WayMaker’. Her song ‘This Is Your Season’ won the Song of the Year award in 2008. Sinach’s music has been performed in churches all over the world.

With all this success, comes great responsibility. Creating uplifting and moving music for millions of fans around the word can take its toll. As a mega star, striking the perfect balance between stardom and spirituality is challenging to say the least.  In an intimate one on interview, Damilola Okeke, of Premier Christian Radio, sat down with Gospel superstar Sinach, and discussed the nitty gritty issues of love, life and her relationship with Jesus Christ.

Before Sinach rose to be one of Nigeria’s mega gospel stars, she was serving in the church. Her music was mostly shared within community. When asked on how she felt before her rise to fame, Sinach said she was grateful as a servant of the church and simply felt “content” to share her music on the platform of the church.

“When you’re content with where God has placed you, he gives you more”

Sinach went on to express how she has dealt with success by not being anxious and enjoying every point in the journey of her success.
These were some great life lessons that the starlet has learned, and she has her close-knit family to thank for that.

“I have learned to trust God, how to move, not to move ahead of him, because when you move ahead of him you are going to get into trouble”

That’s not all she got to thank her family for. A lot of her musical inspiration came from the home. Her father would often play Anita Baker, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston and many others. When Sinach met Pastor Chris however, her musical direction took quite a turn.  Sinach recalled a sermon by Pastor Chris about the holy spirit and salvation and said:

“Not only did I get born again, I got filled with the holy spirit…on the same day”.

Since that life-changing sermon, Sinach turned into the woman we know today, a Gospel superstar.
